Project Description

Project involved the preparation of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs, project management of electrical works, implementation of testing, and commissioning program and operational testing for the development of a 65MVA, 138kV-34.5kV substation and related 34.5kV overhead generation collection system, development of substation installed costs, electrical, civil and structural systems.

Scope of Work

The specific scope of the project included the following elements:

  • Coordinated meetings with Emera and Glen Dhu Wind Energy, the Wind Farm developer, to discuss in general terms the project intention and to establish/identify the most probable point of physical interconnection (POI) of the wind-derived generation system to the utility system
  • Prepared a detailed 138kV-34.5kV power system single line protection, control, and metering  diagram which included a 39/52/65MVA, 138kV-34.5kV  intertie substation and 34.5kV collection system, and all associated power systems, protection, control, metering, and SCADA interfaces
  • Prepared detailed installed cost estimates, detailed design drawing packages for the construction of all substation and collection system project-related electrical power system equipment including bulk power system, grounding, protection, control, metering, SCADA, teleprotection, telecontrol, and all related civil/structural requirements for substation site development.
  • Prepared detailed design drawing packages for the construction of all overhead collection system poles and equipment, including pole spacing, 34.4kV electrical equipment, crossarms, sag and tension tables, and guying requirements. Provided review of overhead line construction, including electrical clearances, regulatory authority requirements, sags and tensions.
  • Provided construction management services and serving as the testing and commissioning agent, prepared and implemented a detailed electrical testing and commissioning and operational testing program for the intertie substation and collection system.
